KC Summers Begins Tournament Play With Victory!

The #3 seed KC Summers Kids Pitch boys baseball team began tournament play by defeating Kiwanis 6-2 on Thursday, June 19, 2008. Their record now stands at 11-6 overall.

KC held Kiwanis scoreless for the first four innings. Wesley Otto struck out all six batters he faced in the third and fourth innings for KC, and he achieved a remarkable feat in inning three: he struck out the side on nine pitches. I have not seen that happen at any level of play since Bob Gibson did it while pitching in relief to record a save for the St. Louis Cardinals in his final year of play (1975) against the Houston Astros.

Andrew Edwards reached safely on a fielding and a throwing error by the Kiwanis pitcher to lead off the KC Summers second inning. Tyler Kemper followed by striking out for out number one. Edwards stole third and he came home on an RBI infield single off the bat of Damien Ferguson on a 2-0 count. Damien stole second and went to third on a bloop single to center by Cole Kidwell, who stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Ethan Smith went down swinging on three pitches, but teammate Gage Jones picked him up by driving home both Damien and Cole. Elijah Mulligan struck out to end the inning, also on three pitches.

In the bottom of the third KC added two more runs. Alec James started the two out rally by tripling into deep center field on a 2-0 count. Colton Shoot drove him home by singling off the glove of the third baseman. Shoot quickly stole second and third, and he scored when Andrew Edwards singled into right field on a 3-1 pitch.

The last run for KC came in the bottom of the fourth. Damien Ferguson started this one out rally by hammering the first pitch he saw into deep left field for a double, raising his average to .484 for the year. Cole Kidwell singled up the middle to plate Damien. Gage Jones had a two out infield single but Elijah Mulligan struck out swinging to end the fourth.

Jacob Fairbanks had an RBI single in the top of the fifth and Austin Draper had a fielder's choice RBI in the top of the sixth for Kiwanis' only runs. Shortstop Colton Shoot made a great play to rob Draper of a hit by going deep into the hole behind third, grabbing the hard hit ball while simultaneously pivoting to his left and firing a strike to second baseman Alec James to force the runner at second.
